INTERVIEW: WITH MASKED BALL’S ‘JOSHUA RAFTER’

The MASKED BALL on Sun 18.3.2012 is the marked genius of the same people behind the WIG PARTY. Held at the lavish Cafe De Paris, this is 100% charity event. SeenQueen.com catches up with Joshua Rafter, one of the parties founders, to find out more…..

How did you come up with the idea of the Masked Ball?

The W.I.G. Party has now for many years been raising money for HIV and AIDS and championing a fair life for those living with the disease. Our aim is to always support charities within this field. Equally every year since 1993 the Life Ball is held in Vienna, the event is a huge fundraiser for fighting AIDS and celebrating life. We got our inspiration from there for our second style of event.

 

Why a Masked Ball?

The Masked Ball is organised by the same team that puts the annual W.I.G. Party together.  With all the effort that goes into that event we thought we’d keep the momentum going with a second, slightly less extravagant party to raise even more money for HIV and AIDS charities. The Masked Ball will be just as much fun, but with a simpler format. For example there is a more low-key (but no less fabulous) dress code and a lower ticket price. So it will be much easier for more people to come along and have some fun while raising money for a great cause. We’re really excited about the event – there’s something so seductive about a mask, isn’t there?

 

Why is it being held now in March?

To be honest it feels like a natural distance in time  from the mammoth W.I.G. event held every year in October. It is also enough space that the committee and I feel we have now fully recovered from our organising ordeal. Big smile.

 

 Does it support the same charities as Wig Party? 

We are once again supporting NAT (National AIDS Trust). NAT plays a really important role in influencing policies and decision-making on HIV. The non-profit-making organisation also campaigns for the rights of those affected by HIV, fights the stigma associated with it and works hard to educate people on the subject and prevent the spread of the virus.

Quite simply, they are pioneers, who work tirelessly for this good cause. So we are proud to help support the charity in its efforts, by getting the name out there, raising awareness and much needed cash. 80p of every pound donated goes towards their core HIV policy work. So anyone who comes along to The Masked Ball knows the money we all raise will go towards shaping attitudes, challenging injustice and changing lives.

 

Apart from the Masked theme, is this an extension of the Wig Party or a totally different concept?

The Masks are not a theme as such, this is a brand new event from the W.I.G. Party bunch of volunteers. There is no pageant and judges with the usual plethora of trophies and prizes. This really is a dance party first and foremost but with the easy twist of everyone donning a mask. Guests at this event need only bring a mask (which is compulsory) and some mates and have a really great time. The aim is to bring people together for a good cause, without feeling obliged to spend loads of time and money on costumes. But most importantly, just bring yourself and prepare to have a really great night, knowing you are supporting an equally great cause.

 

What we can we expect from this party?

We’ve got a rocking line up of DJs playing all evening at The Masked Ball, including Marco Gee, Rob Skyes and D’Johnny, Brent Nichols and Tony English. Plus come along if only to check out Peyton, who’s launching his new track – boy can that guy sing!

We obviously have a few tricks up our sleeve to make it all a bit different in true W.I.G. Party style, with wandering magicians and fortune tellers on the upstairs terraces for those taking a break whilst everyone else gets on down to some stomping tracks across the two dance floors.

We will also be announcing on the night the brand new theme for this years even bigger W.I.G. Party.

Is this a new annual event? 

The Masked Ball is an annual charity event and will now sit comfortably alongside its older and bigger sister event the W.I.G. Party. If the group of volunteers who make up the committee have the staying power and people continue to turn up and support our fundraising events then we may just pop in one or two other new event ideas that I personally have brewing. We have been approached to do something as part of the LBGT Olympic celebrations, as well as something for Lovebox and a rather large sponsor has been trying to lure us to Miami for the first W.I.G. Party there. To be honest it all depends on whether the committee and myself have enough time and energy as with all of us having full time time jobs and successful careers these events to take their toll. I do hope though that one day the W.I.G. Party will be held in the Royal Albert Hall, full to the brim with humungous amounts of synthetic hair. Now would that not be a sight?

GALLERY: Hottest Flyers of 2011

Flyers are a clubs businees card. The flyer is usually the first point of call a clubber will get of the club…and how the flyer is styled, what’s on it, the image and the concept will either speak volumes or end up in the gutter with the other garbage.

This selection of flyers are ones that have appealed to us for one reason or another. The model, the cleverness, the humour, the design…whatever it was that caught our eye…and went straight into our Best Of 2011 folder.

Unlike the DJs, promoters, dancers and hosts…the flyer designers are in the background of the whole process, but are equally an important part of the clubs success. You may see a credit to thier genius on the flyer somewhere, but this is for you for alluring, teasing, and making us want to be part of what is being offered.

Club Pix: Circuit BCN 2011

With the year soon coming to a close we look at the WINNER OF THE BEST INTERNATIONAL BRAND 2010, Circuit Barcelona, with pics from their FaceBook group.

Circuit Party in Barcelona is one of the most powerful international brands attracting thousands of people from all over Europe and the world to over a week of parties ranging from SuperMartxe, La Leche, the Circuit main event, pool parties and La Atantida. It’s growth has been nothing but phenomenal, it’s debut event attracting thousands to the summy climate of Barcelona at the peak of summer; and growing in days and size exponentially. In the short time it has been around it has become one of the worlds major gay clubbing events…all with that typical Spanish style.

Many use it as a launch board to visit Ibiza, others as a hight light to their summer holidays while further abroad it is their one and only destination.

CLUB PIX: PlayTime @ LoProfile

It has taken Soho by storm for its sexy vibe, it’s decadent nature and for starring some of the biggest names in the porn world. Jay Robert’s PLAYTIME is not your usual Friday night at Lo Profile.

With some of London’s biggest name DJs providing the soundtrack, play time teams up Lo Profile, Gaydar and international porn stars and throw them into the mix.

In one of the LoProfiles alcove a bed is placed and the porn stars are let loose on each other. The place goes from social clubbing to carnal observation in a split second. Straight boys don’t know where to look, girls are bemused and wondering why their boyfriend don’t ‘look like that’, the gay boys are pushing to the front for a better look and the Bi boys suddenly choose hot cock over hot chick. The voyeurs are stirred into action and the porn stars performance shocks, rocks and  stimulates. They are limited however by council regulations…no erections in public please , which can be difficult especially when all you are wearing is a jock strap and a hard on that has very little else place to go except free itself from the confines that hold it.

Club Pix: Trade 21st Birthday

21 years in clubbing is a long time in this fickle town, but Trade as a special event club has lasted the distance.

Celebrating 21 years at new super club Pulse, it attracted the old, the new and the scary (it was Halloween after all).

CLUB PIX: Room Service (Collection)

Room Service at Miabella every Thursday night is the revolutionary boutique club that has put ‘social’ back into clubbing attracting the cream of the gAyLIST, the beautiful, the fabulous and the arty.

Fronted by the scene starlet Jodie Harsh, she epitomizes the exclusive style of what we call boutique clubbing, antithesis to the direction main stream gay clubbing seems to be heading for. This is a club with a door policy aimed at quality and not quantity and with a space to match. It focuses on a certain type of clubber, one that reflects the promoter and their entourage. This is an old school principle applied in a modern way…and the result…all of London’s hottest getting down there on a Thursday night to be seen, to socialize and to get photographed by the clubs photographer. Even holding the club during the week gives it that air of exclusivity and hedonism somewhat reminiscent to the Sunday clubbing a few years back.

These club pix are taken from the clubs FaceBook page which you can VIEW HERE. That page contains hundreds of images. The photography style is as much as part of the clubs image as those who go there and in itself can be part of the attraction of this club.

VIDEO: LA DEMENCE CRUISE 2011

Finally, after misplacing our footage taken on the La Demence Cruise 2011, here is our video take from that experience.

With clips taken from a majority of the pool parties and a couple at night it gives you a great taste of the experience. The parties were very enthusiastic and made the most of the limited pool area…and as you can see the crowd was very much up for it. From hot men to scary old men, from young to hung, from leather to feather and from bears to twinks…the cruise attracted all the gay tribes. The Mr La Demence Cruise competition was of particular interest of which there also some short snippets.

Video: LoveChild Blue

LoveChild relaunched itself at Pulse as it plans to enter the new year with a new look, style and feel. Pulse is London’s newest gay-super-club.

LoveChild took over the two main rooms, with gogo dancers, a stripper who played to the boys and the girls and about 500 eager LoveChilders looking for something fresh.

Our video takes in the main floor, the familiar but very hot gogos and brief snaps from the stripper.

CLUB PIX: LoveChild Blue

LoveChild launched itself on to the gay scene again on Saturday 15th October 2011 at the new  gay superclub Pulse. After leaving Fire, LoveChild is reinventing itself.

This party had a host of familiar dancers, a stripper (who never did get his wang out much to our disappointment) and a line up of DJs which was hard to beat, playing a wide scope of music from tribal, electro, progressive, funky and and commercial house. The modest crowd of about 600 clubbers made the party large enough to be an event but small enough to be intimate. Alex Erfan, the promoter, was happy with the success of the party and saw a future for it at Pulse. Pulse will give the club the ability to grow and expand without the logistical and political restrictions LoveChild experience at it’s previous venue. Feedback said it was like the ‘old days’ where clubbers and crew felt like part of a family and this made it fun, a little wild and friendly. From leather clad men to gogo dancers in blue shaded underwear…it looks like LoveChild and Pulse are going to make great disco buddies.

CLUB PIX: HotWired 2011

It was one of the best events we have been to this year. Well organised, full of hot fetish men with a fantastic play space and huge circuit sized dance floor . Add to that the chill out space, the horny out-door smoking terrace and the unique venue that suited the event perfectly, HOTWIRED has landed itself a reputation that should see future events turn it into a global fetish brand.

Arriving early we quickly slipped into the playroom to check out what they have set up. 2 smashed up cars were graffitied up and ready for action. Several spaces had medical equipment in them such as gynecological chairs (with stirrups). No surprise what they were used for!

The main dance floor was perfect with a stellar line up of DJs from both the Rut and Hard On lineup. Lasers gyrated and stabbed into the dark spaces, making the atmosphere sexy and dirty. The sound system just pumped out the tracks and while the dance floor was the first port of call for most, later in the night the shifting balance towards the huge playroom occurred. Seated areas with food, a huge toilet block with several urinal and cabins and a massive coat check with changing areas all added to make this event to be well organised and professional.

Most people said last years party was great, but this was even better and we agreed 100%. Just check our pics…and see you at HotWired 2012.
