Video: Matinee Returns by Chris Geary

When Matinee first came to London via Oliver M and under the guiding hands of Rod Lay & Wayne Shires of former Crash and now Eastern Bloc fame…it revolutionise London clubbing.

After a series of political battles,  liscene disagreements and all the other nasty political  things that plague London clubbing, the famous Barcelona based brand returns under the Orange Nation umberella.

While many thought the big production style of the Matinee may have suited Pulse or The Coronet better (the home of WE), London’s multi room Fire provided a cramped but adequate space for the relaunch.

The shows were reportedly the usual ‘drag boy gogo’ styled spearheaded by Matinee when it first came to London. The DJ lineup with different faces for Fire but also well known was welcomed. Without a doubt the place was packed to the rafters to welcome Matinee back.

Our spy back from Spain Peter Bass sneaked in the back way to get a retaste of Matinee and reported …”the crowd was your usual hunks and Vauxhall trash. The shows could have been SuperMartxe or WE, but that would make sense considering they are all Spanish brands. The music was excellent..Gonzalo was brilliant. The best bits, well it’s Matinee innit. The worst- the poor dancers were crammed into a smal performance space, the show was sexy but looked like a mini me version, and not to mention the crush to see it. And whose brilliant idea is it to put a coat check outside in the freezing cold? Apart from that…good job! Can’t wait for the next one!”

CLUB POLL 2011: Your Disco Needs your Vote

The SQ CLUB POLL 2011 is closing soon and it has been the most surprising poll of all!

European clubs are outdoing the London clubs…perhaps a sign of the times? And sophisticated Soho is out stripping clubbing Vauxhall!

We have made it so easy for you to vote…and using the power of FACEBOOK to insure no tampering or cheating (not that you do!)…and now we are making it easier!

See the clubs name’s on the right? CLICK ON THEM, and that will bring up the club’s flyer. Click on LIKE underneath and you’ve voted.

With this new format and tight security it seems clubbers are saying no to Vauxhall and yes to Europe & Soho. Or the clubbing in Vauxhall has gone down such a path that SeenQueen.com site visitors and Vauxhall clubbers are no longer the same people. Whether they don’t care, are sending a message to the promoters, exercising apathy (what’s worse, being disliked or people feeling nothing) or treating the clubs like a product you buy, use and dump (so why vote?) we don’t know. Any of those messages would not be good news to a promoter.

The SeenQueen.com club poll is important because we are not supported by clubbing revenue…so we remain in the middle. Trust in a poll that comes from a place that is financed by the clubs in that poll is a leap of faith in trust and credibility?

Just in case you haven’t visited FACEBOOK here is your chance to VOTE DIRECTLY FROM THIS PAGE.

1. CLICK ON A CLUBS NAME

2. A NEW WINDOW WILL OPEN WITH A FLYER FROM THAT CLUB.

3. CLICK ON LIKE UNDER THE FLYER (LEFT SIDE)

4. CLOSE WINDOW, SELECT ANOTHER CLUB AND REPEAT.

VIDEO: Casa Latina Sugar Daddy by Chris Geary

Casa Latina Sugar Daddy returned to Fire for it’s third outing on Sat 24.9.2011. Perhaps not as big as it’s previous event, the Fire crew tried to give London a homegrown taste of the Brazillian love affair.

Disco Matt summarised the event….”Casa Latina “Sugar daddy” certainly pulled in a considerable crowd, a good looking one at that, not the stunners of SuperMartXe for sure, but a bunch of Brazilians & plenty of others that certainly knew how to party and make magnificent merriment to mounds of majestic music. And with outstanding performances from D’Johnny, Zach Burns & newcomer Ale Ameral, there was much to celebrate on the musical front…Add into the mix Casa’s prolific production, its exceptional effects & its amazing atmosphere, ingredients that made an incredible impression back in July & did again this weekend, and we can definitely see the crowds swarming back for the next event….” Read Matt’s full review HERE.

SQU: Rebel With A Cause, Sylvia Rebel

She is one of the most recognised female faces on the gay scene. Her blonde hair, pouting lips and love for music drives her into the arms of the gay scene but has given her a taste for the Ibizan lifestyle. Her look is striking and she’s confident. Journalist, Promoter, PR, DJ whore…we caught up with Sylvia Rebel to ask her a few questions about love, politics, clubbing and wondered what it would be like if she ruled the world.

My name is Sylvia Murphy, but people know me as Sylvia Rebel.

My name is Sylvia Murphy, but people know me as Sylvia Rebel. I got this name when I was around 14 or 15 when I use to be obsessed with a band called Red Star Rebels, a Glam rock unsigned band who were brilliant. I would follow them everywhere and they would get me into to their gigs under age.  This is really where it all started. I went to college studying Media, Art, English and Performing Arts and later university of the arts where I studied Journalism. At Uni I applied for various work experience placements and worked for The Sun, South London Press, The Guardian, The BBC, Gay Times and loads more. However, one placement I done was at QX magazine which was only meant to be for a few weeks but I ended up staying for a few months. I felt at home and knew this was the scene for me. After completing my time at QX I was offered a freelance job which I still do to this day. I then started to flyer for Alex Erfan where I become really interested in promoting and was so inspired by his events. Shortly after I met Oliver M and become head of street promotions and shortly after that met Craig Elder, who gave me Gravity. I done Gravity for 10 months, it was the most enjoyable time of my life to date. I leant so many new skills and I found what I am really good at. At the same time I was working for The Orange Group on all of their events and done everything from assistant manager roles, to working in the office and just working on the nights. However, I recently gave up Gravity because I want to concentrate on some other projects in life now. Now I am currently working for Pacha night club, which is hard as I am such a small fish in a big pond but I am really enjoying it and it is a new chapter in life. I have a few amazing projects coming up at Pacha and at some other places which I won’t mention yet. I am also hoping to become a DJ as I love music unconditionally so as soon as I get my equipment there is no stopping me.

If you could have dinner with any person…who would they be and why them?

This might sound really lame, but George Michael. His music has got me thorough so much and I personally think he has been one of the most talented people to walk earth He is very close to home now, a lot of people I know, know him, but I still haven’t met my idol. I would love to get to know his background and his stories. I would also ask him to sing for me and faint.

If you ruled the world what one law would you pass?

Gay equality and everyone should have a home. Sorry I need two.

Passion is the best gift god can give you.

What do you like/dislike about yourself the most?

I like how passionate I am, if I want something nothing will stop me. Passion is the best gift god can give you. I also love my confidence and my obsessive nature- which really allows me to go into depth for a long period of time on anything that I love! I don’t like the way I think too much about something and then get confused haha. I get upset and easily confused in life sometimes and don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel but always seem to come out from it.

Which three people in your life have influenced you the most and why?

I don’t really have any big influences to be honest. But there are close people around me like Lee Dalloway Qx’s deputy head who has just been the best encouragement from day one. Some promoters have REALLY influenced me who I don’t want to mention. And Alan k who if you knew about you would know why and also he is one of the reasons why working in events was what I wanted to do.

.. living in Ibiza with my own weekly club night with my DJ/producer husband haha.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Yes, because the boy I first knew I was going to be with last year when I met him DJing at a pre party is the boy who has been my first love who I still love now. He also showed me so much and I have leant so much from him.

Have you ever kissed a girl…and did you like it?

Yeah of course, nah, does nothing for me. I like a big, strong, controlling man.

Where do you think you will be in 10 years time?

Hopefully, married with two boys, and living in Ibiza with my own weekly club night with my DJ/producer husband haha.

Do you believe in God?

I believe in god, yes! I don’t like going into any deeper than that though because like I said, I am a thinker and I go mad. I come from a very spiritual family. And I know I have a guardian angel.

What’s the ‘next big thing’?

Take over the straight scene, but still work in the gay scene. I also want to try to get into journalism more and start DJING.

Club Review: Casa Latina Car Wash by SceneB.itch

SceneB.itch are a couple of anonymous club reviewers who seem to get around town and to all the right clubs. Their anonymous profile allows them to give honest, raw and to the point reviews. You can read more of their reviews from their FACEBOOK PAGE.

CASA LATINA: CAR WASH

Can you believe it – The House of Latin shakes its b.itchin booty in London once more, and Latino-B.itch is off on holiday in Brazil. So who is the luckier? Him with the sunshine (ha – no, it’s now winter in the south of Brasil  hehe) or moi having to go to a club full of hot Latinos – only time will tell…

At breath-taking speed a few of us managed to arrange our online clubtickets before the usual and expected Friday midnight cut off. Only to find one lucky B.itchet (a friend of a B.itch) still managed to spectacularly pull it off on the Saturday morning. Special offers on joint Beyond ticket were the order of the day, AS IF? But with “disco napping” currently in vogue, I tried it. Um do you actually try to sleep or just keep your eyes closed under the eye mask. Torture and I think a mission totally failure – but rested for sure, yes.

The Amazonian like rain storms finally cleared, leaving our car nicely washed, and leaving me one less task and free for an ultra efficient public transport system to help me arrive 15 minutes ahead of schedule. So standing outside Vauxhall station there was a variety of fetish clad types heading off to Recon, but no change of mind, the B.itchettes were on their way, and the eye candy around here made me feel like a pimp.

Arriving with big Ben at the stroke of midnight there was no queue and were efficiently processed by the friendly security team, and then got our Beyond wrist band (we think) the poor petal on the cash desk seemed new. Through the three sets of doors – reminding me of the sound proofing airlocks of Greek holiday islands – and into the effortless £2 coat/bag check and into a half empty Fire main room.

Yes, duh, the Latino thing is not to arrive too early isn’t it! But this gave us plenty of catch-up-over drinks time and we took our vantage point on the walkway overlooking the main floor. Slowly, but thank fully surely, by 1.00 am ‘the mob’ had descended and the floor was picking up nicely with Leandro Kloppe, D’Johnny, DJ Douguim and DJ Junior on the main decks that night. And there really was a real live car being washed on the stage with a plethora of hot wet go go dancers giving it and themselves one mighty wet wipe over to the upfront vocal beats that also had a latin twist. But some very funky and up for it music that had the sexed up crowd gagging for more.

Taking a well earned break we ventured into the Latin Lounge to face even more hot beats and live percussion accompanying Ariel and then Brent Nichols serving up some progress rhythms and latin house grooves – to a crowd that seemed to be extra VIP latino sexy – and we were getting an eye full from that sexy Brazilian with the abs! But shy he is, so it was a Manchester lad with a body to die for that went around our group to find out who was single that evening – before unleashing his body on me for a free trial. Cha cha cha, escaping to buy a drink I was standing in the presence of one of the top DJ’s and oh la la the bar man didn’t even recognise him. But um, how come the DJ has to come to the bar anyway – is he a man of the people or was it me he wanted to be besides…mmm yes now we have seen him at WE parties too. NOTW is still closed innit?

We exited the towards the Mirror Arch – and isn’t that a bit of a F1 car wash chicane. Was the stage especially extended for that car? Perhaps as this is a bit of a traffic jam cos everyone who is anyone, wants to dance around the stage and yet it was bang in the middle of the cross route from Latin lounge to Mirror Arch bar – hmmm – it’s an interesting logistical challenge as I kept having to trip over hot hot Latino boys and pretend that I was grabbing them for safety reasons. But made it safely, amorously across and into the Mirror Arch bar – the only part open – and it meant less busy toilets which had also succumbed to the Brazilian invasion had even been applied to the well cared for and totally Casa-Banheiro-Latina – which made the theme night feel like you really were lost in Brazil – fantastico!

But back into the hot spot of the night and into the main room where we finished our evening with the CO2 cannons, lasers and hot Latino influenced beats, surrounded by an even hotter crowd that meant a trip to Beyond was going to be mandatory.

All in all, a very successful night, a good mix of people – it wasn’t all Latinos but a good selection as expected but a mixed hot Fire crowd. But the musical mix was probably the most surprising – as it was very uplifting, mixed, vocal and generally fun with nice smatterings of Latin twists and turns thrown in with that distinctive drums beats, aka like David H on percussion and even a bit of classic sampling. Whether the decision not to open the Mirror Arch fully was planned or not – it was the right one – as it kept the spaces comfortably full. Our final thought is more of a DIY suggestion – we just think that perhaps the main room bar and stage could swap places – why not give it a try – if you can host a car wash, what else is possible. Anyhow, one thing to remember is that the masterminds behind this event were themselves, I think, Brazilians – seems it’s in their blood how to throw a great party.

Until the next time at Casa Latina. Besos e beijos – MUAH xx

Galleries: Casa Latina Car Wash

Casa Latina returned to Fire with a ‘Car Wash’ party. Although it’s initial launch a couple of months back was met with mediocre success, this party was a totally different story. Upon first walking in the place was already packed with a crazed mix of Latinos and thier posse.

The main room was pumping already to the sounds of D’Johnny who was spinning out a progressive mix of tracks. Over the in the Latin Lounge Ariel was getting down and dirty with some Latin beats and backed by a percussionist. Taking over from him was Brent Nicholls who swept us away in a sea of musical delights ranging from funky and uplifting percussive styles to big fat chunky grooves that this DJs only knows how to spin.

Noticeably the Mirror Arch did not open making Fire a furnace as even more Latino lovelies made their way into the club. From what we were told one of the Mirror Arch DJs didn’t turn up leaving that room closed.

Still in the Latin lounge Brent handed the reigns over to hunky Nathan 6 who dropped the Latin sound and went for a disco-vocal led set. We crossed over to the main room after a while which was heaving and turned into a sweat pit. I didn’t mind so much,  as rubbing up against all those hot Brazilians did my ego a world of good.

The show revealed a spread of hunky boys, skimpy clad girls and the sort gyrating over a make shift car. Soap suds were a plenty and what I would have done to be one of those sponges being wiped over parts of the gogos I often dreamt of going. It was more a show of gyration and sexual innuendo than a choregraphed spectacualr….but it was easy on the eye, and along with paper gun explosions and various other special explosions and pyrotechnics..it was a lot of fun.

Both the main floor and the lounge remained jam packed to the end, and to quote DJ Brent Nicholls  ’it was mental’.

With Hard-On and Bear Necessity hosting their own rooms and Gaydar hosting the VIP room, HustlaBall this year was the biggest ever in London.
