FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE or THE DJ WHO LOVED ME

Dmitry K is well know on the London gay scene as the big hunk of a Russian always with a smile. His love for music is obvious,; when talks about it to one of his favourite DJs his passion flows. Now DMITRY K has stepped into the DJ Arena himself. Already doing an emergency fill in slot at London global Dance Festival, he has secured his first residency at The Box. He is one of the new kids on the block....did we mention he was a hunk...and we catch up with him to find out more....

Q: How did u first get in to djing?

Been into dance music since i was a teenager, When I was around 15 I bought my first dance collection It was on cassettes German Elektro/Acid House, Unmixed Compilations, really loved it. once I heard them in the late 80s I was hooked on the sound .. It took a while, but started going to club nights in 93, and by 94 was hooked on the music, I used to spent lots of my time making playlists onto other Cassettes and later onto CDs. Been Djin’ in Camp back to Russia in 1994… At this point I realized that I really loved the feeling of sharing music and making people shake their asses and I wanted to get into this seriously.

Come to think of how did I get into djing, it wasn't very extravagant for me like some other people. I just decided in the mid 2008 to buy set of CDj’s decks n Pioneer Mixer, since then never looked back. I can still remember walking in to Soho’s record shop and not knowing the difference between styles of House music. The Guy behind the desk at the record shop had to guide me through the different kinds of House music styles...I still have few tracks I bought that day, and I shudder every-time I listen to them...but it's where it all began!
I started DJing because I love the music. I didn't get into DJing because it's cool or because you want to be really popular. It's a fairly unappreciated craft, and will drive you nuts. I Do it because I love the music!

Q: What do u hope to achieve?

I AM TRYING TO Get into production. Do a course and learn how to make my own music. It will help me to establish my sound and raise my profile as a Dj. And do what I feel and believe in.

Q: What do u think of the current music in London Clubs?

I think it’s a bit fragmented with some people only liking minimal or tech or Electro or progressive or whatever…to me it’s all just house music and I just play what I like and mix it up. I think that there’s a new wave of house coming through that’s been inspired by the Spanish/Italian boys and so there’s a lot of tribal edged beats going around now but not that many vocal tracks. There’s also an overkill of familiar rinsed out records from 10 years ago doing the rounds again but I guess it’s new to the younger generation. We need some more good songs! I hope to bring into London scene not just uplifting/pop but also Funky n quality side of house music..

Sharon O' Love is one of the girl DJs out there on the scene. Recently she has been making waves in the clubs here and overseas, so we catch up for a little tête-à-tête.

1. How did you first get started as a DJ?

Like many DJ's I just got a pair of Techniques and my ideal threesome was created - me and 2 decks. I started to play the local scene in Nottingham and then moved to play clubs up North like Speedqueen, Red Raw, Vague, Rise, Pukka Up to name a few.

2. What's it like for a girl on the gay scene where male DJs tend to dominate?

I love it...I get to be one of the boys...and play as good as them too, when I first started to DJ I was a gay girl playing on the hetro scene so it was twice as tough. I am definitely a gay man trapped inside a dykes body so I feel completely comfortable around the boys behind the decks and on the floor.

3. What do you think of the current London gay scene?

I don't overplay London so I really enjoy my City moments....I play regular at Booster right now, its such a great Sunday club, its like being part of a family...we are all up at the same time, all have a cigarette at the same time, all shake our ass at the same time....a great place to be at the end of a weekend. London has so much to offer and the crowd seems quite transient in many of the clubs yet at the same time you can feel comfortable around familiar faces, cant imagine there is ever a moment of boredom. I respect the clubs/promoters for keeping the scene so diverse, they put a lot of effort into their events, it keep the UK gay circuit on the map globally.


4. Name three people that have inspired you musically & why?

I am inspired by many different people - overtime I walk into a club, hear a new beat, sing along to a classic, get a head rush off another DJ's set, watch each person move on the floor, hug and smile at those doing the same to me....oh but 3 people....right now my Holy Trinity would have to be Ivan Gomez, Alex Wheeler (studio partner - After 6), Pagano

5. What r u up to...? Your latest gigs? International?

Gigs - Mexico tour - Nation, Living, Barecelona Bar, Con La Rojas, By + Ayor - Switzerland, NY Club & Saint - Munich, 136 Grad - Hamburg, Heaven - Madrid, Goya - Berlin, Barcode - London, Gay Village - Rome to name a few....and of course twice monthly at Booster (Area).
Production - Working on a couple of new ideas under the guise of After 6, some international collaborations coming up and also just getting European remixes of 'Stella Loves Me' completed - soon to be released.
